Compiled manifesto of Unilorin SU public relation officers

It is no longer a news that the current election of Student Union Central Executive Council of University of Ilorin, this session is one of the most engaging and toughest to expect. With the cooperation of the current administration and ISEC commissioners, they want this to be the fairest and most transparent election in the modern history of Unilorin.

With this Agape and other media personalities wants a fair voting from the voters too, with this motive burning in us; it brought out the movement of compiling all the manifesto of candidates who are ready to show the voters what they have for us. Robert Greene said "an aspiring leader who hides from the public before emerging will never be transparent when he becomes the leader". This is a movement of anticipating transparency, we want the student not just to vote because of just the name but because of the blueprint the candidate have for them.

Any candidate whose manifesto doesn't appear here as believed is not ready to be transparent and not willing to give his blueprint to the populace of this great 'better by far' institution maybe because they don't want them to be questioned in the future or any other reason which we can't just introspect.

Whatever is written and put on a global space like this will always be there and we can use it to put them on check when they emerge. According to Chris Timble 'media is a great tool to keep our leaders on check'.

This is not a political movement as friendship and other relationship is taken out of it, not even a comma is added or subtracted from what is submitted.

_MANIFESTO FOR THE SEAT OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS OFFICER P.R.O, UNILORIN_

The main problem of a man is his inability to define his strength and weaknesses.
The main problem of a society is lack of communication.
A student is said to be poor if he lacks information and I'm here to enrich students with information.

By virtue of introduction;  I'm Oyewumi Muftau Bidemi popularly known as MYT. A 400Level Electrical Engineering student of our great citadel of learning, Unilorin. vying for the post of the Public Relations Officer P.R.O, UNILORIN.

A soldier who as gone to battles can tell more of wars. My antecedence over the years within the sphere of the school as prepared me to be worthy and experienced to contest for the seat.

I'm an individual willing, able, capable, enthusiastic and ready to serve our prestigious university in the strength of the Public Relations Officer P.R.O. The decision of this aspiration is not by compulsion or power thirst but rather it's passion driven and also by my strong believe in my strength to serve the union to being the best P.R.O ever existed in the history of Unilorin.

*Why should you vote me in?*
As we all know, the office of the P.R.O is saddled with the major responsibility of disseminating information but it takes been a writer, a public speaker and a media personnel who understands the ways of passing information. Yes, I certify all these. The major aim still remains effective dissemination of information at appropriate time.

_I have a six achievable points Agenda_
- *Transparency in administration* : An administration that's not transparent remains corrupt. There shall be provision for media chats, press conference and also I will uphold the radio program "The Stewardship" to serve as avenue for the congress to ask questions, give opinions, thoughts, ideas and observations to all the union officials. This will also act as check and balance.

*Effective Dissemination of Information* : I will work with noteworthy and capable member of the union which shall cut across all faculties and hall of residence to help in the effective dissemination of information and notifications within the school.


*Improved Student Union Bulletin* : The bulletin shall come with well packaged up-to-date informations with better-to-read design and it shall get to appropriate quarters.

- *Creation of a Union's website* : As saddled on the office of the Public Relations Officer constitutionally in our union's compendium-To preserve the image of the school both internally and externally, I believe having an active Union's website with history of the school, notifications, events awareness shall help in discharging such purpose.

- *Leadership Summit* : This is an annual program from the office of the Public Relations Officer where dignitaries from different part of the country are invited and it's aimed at lecturing students about leadership roles and the necessities of leadership. This will come to stay rigidly during my time if elected.

- *Info-graphics* : God bless the initiative of the current Public Relations Officer who capitalised very much on Social media as the major means of passing information and it's indeed very effective, I shall improve on it. In the chase to enrich all students with information, I noticed there are large amount of students who are  media apathy due to the numerous reason of not been able to access media. As an engineering student who works with facts & figures; "People tends to be attracted to graphics which they see and read through than what they hear". There shall be provision for info-graphics at a very strategic place with day-to-day activities been projected on it.

A reasonable and responsible man will only say that which is achievable within his capability and not what he can never do.

DREAMERS DON'T SLEEP MANIFESTO.

Aspiring for the post of Student Union Public Relations Officer (PRO)

So, I have been told of the strength, resiliency, selflessness and bravery portrayed by my grandpa when he was an Otun of my hometown, random elders would come to my family house just to narrate the story of this great man. The smile and joy that shone on the faces of the elders when they speak of him made me crave for the opportunity to serve a group of people too. I am not here to bore you with the tales of my long gone grandpa, neither am I here to boast about my rich leadership background, nor how I would serve a set of people with the promise of building a castle in the air. I am rather here to embrace your mandate, trust and ultimately support through voting. I have been nursing the hope and prayed alongside for a day my little dream would become an humongous reality. Few months ago, I heard a loud knock at my door, I peeped and voila, it was the opportunity, finally at my door. Good thing is the key to open the door lies comfortably on your palm and truly with your help we can all open the door.

The fact that the core duty of a public relations officer is the dispensation of adequate and timely information is no alien to the student populace. There are some oversight duties however that should not be overemphasised.  In the vein of discharging this duty to the fullest, I have designed a two segment strategies. The core and the oversight duties.

Core strategies;

1. Social media: according to my own small scale survey on 100 students across five faculties, 86% obtain their information from Facebook and WhatsApp, 60 from just WhatsApp, 26% from just Facebook, 10 from Twitter and 4 from Instagram. This numbers gave me more conviction and helped me come to the conclusion of intensifying the use of social media as the major medium of disseminating information. WhatsApp, having the highest percent will stand as the flag bearer of our campaign.

2. Repackaging of old conventional way: of course, we grew up to reading new Intel on the notice board. Do we really need to expunge the concept? My answer is no. I stand for the restructure of our notice board, this is where we consider our friends without a smart phone and laptop. Instead of boring long details, we can replace it with catchy, concise and clear graphics designs of the details, people relate with colourful images pretty more than text. And in a way, we are empowering our student graphics designers.

3. No door policy: we maintain a no door policy where students can come to drop suggestions on out to better the informational affairs of the students or come for further demystification or elucidation of any ambiguity in messages passed across. This will also help in getting a feedbacks from the students.

4. Restructuring of the union's radio program: Believe me, this is a programme the whole of Unilorin students should urge for its next airing, a programme where students should be able to call in and give feedbacks or asked questions, not just a one way broadcast, an interactive session would be allowed on the program.

5. Faculty/departmental PROs training and workshops: Teaming up is a surest way to winning up, one synergy is better than millions of independent energy. We would be needing a team of information mongers, and who can do the job is not the faculty and the departmental PROs who would be reorientated, workshops would be organised to train them on how to use the information dispensation tools to the fullest, this way, the flow of only adequate information would be ascertained. The departmental PRO will work in return with the class representative as they are they closer to the students.

Oversight strategies:

6. Student empowerment: seminar and contest will be arranged to help student build their latent talent, all some talents need is a triggering effect,  someone to press the button, shows and contest will hold testing for writing, speaking, singing, designing. Training sector where student will undergo different type of handiwork and intellectuals.

7. War against monopoly of information: During my rally, I gather informations on how Intel from the union building always have a stopover somewhere somehow before finally getting to the waiting ears, eyes and mind of the students, I took it up and did some verification, I was able to discover that some of the complaints were misinterpreted but to avoid future recurrences, the union will have it own blog, where student can easily go to fetch informations.

The last two are kind of a new and my innovations, what I will like to be remembered for. I called them the "Twonnovation"

8. Advertisement of project: This is the part where we truly give every students opportunity to showcase what they are! stuffed of, it is a thing to train someone and another thing to give them a platform to display what they have learned. It is will be too hypocrisy of us to train and dump, therefore, the office of public relations officer will advertise publicly its project so that interested student will be able to submit proposals.

8. A powerful talk show: This is a show will will include all Unilorin student, both at the PS or the mini site. Where students come together to talk about Contemporary issues, trendy issues and other related topics, here is when student of related topics will be invited to come talk on the issues, we get to also hear from our international students, share their experiences, many of us stay next-door to international students but we have never though of knowing about their cultures, this program will help in tackling this situation. The show, which is going to hold once a week or twice a month, depending on how feasible the financings are.


All these are not feeble promises but a concrete manifesto. Remember DREAMERS DON'T SLEEP.
